What Kind of Weird Lost and Found Is This Anyway?

Yesterday, I took the girls shopping for a few new spring things and Sass got a new hat -- a purple, Disney princess, baseball cap -- that she adores.

She wore it to the grocery store today, and somewhere between produce and the green olives it slipped from our cart and was lost.

Devastation.

We back tracked twice and made two trips to the lost and found. Finally, I left our phone number, and we headed home. Sass moaned in her carseat the whole way.

Not 5 minutes after we got home, they called. It was found. I ran to tell Sass the good news.

"How will they keep it safe?" she asked.

I explained it was in a special place, under their counter.

"Someone else will take it hoooooommmmme," she cried.

No. Only we can pick it up.

"I don't want to talk to you about that anymore," she mysteriously proclaimed, and off she went.

I just put her to bed 1/2 hour ago.

"But we didn't go get my hat!" she moaned.

"We'll get it tomorrow," I promised, "First thing in the morning."

She started crying real tears, sobs in fact.

"But if we do that, I'm afraid someone will paint it red!"

Somehow, I can't see someone sneaking in with a can of spray paint and covering that hat with a fresh coat of cherry red in the night. Just in case she was on to something, however, I called M. at work and asked him to pick it up on his way home.

I can't wait to be woken up to squeals of delight when she sees it lying on her pillow in the morning, in one piece and still her beloved purple.

Crazy hat hi-jacking painters be damned!

Remember when she thought her room was going to be painted "Big Red"? This kid of yours has some fixation on red paint. Cute story. I wish she hadn't worried all day though.
